Review: 'Poppy's Three Man' by Sophie Sloane (2014)

It is the wedding day for Poppy Shillington, a young, American woman. Everything is perfect: the white dress, the veil, the orchestra, except for one thing. Who is the groom? She stares into the mirror in her dressing room, and reminisces about her relationships with the three men she dated in her twenties: Dax, Mike, and Simon. A good-looking guy with bad manners, a straight-forward sensitive soul, and an adoring intellectual.

She remembers the passionately devastating trip to Paris, her humiliating adventures in the Great Outdoors, and a traumatizing game of Scrabble with the in-laws. As she shares the embarrassing, funny, and romantic stories of each man, it becomes increasingly challenging to predict which man she will end up with.

There's nothing like a thoroughly enjoyable and fun chick lit novel, and that is exactly what I expected when I was asked to read and review Sophie Sloane's 'Poppy's Three Men', which was released in December 2014. Sophie Sloane herself contacted me about possibly reviewing her romantic comedy stories and I immediately was excited about her work, based on the titles, blurbs and book covers. The first novella I planned on sitting down with was 'Poppy's Three Men' and I definitely had my fingers crossed for a lovely chick lit read!

Twenty-something Poppy Shillington is ready to marry the love of her life, especially after all her dating and boyfriend adventures ever since she was a teenager. As the moment of walking down the aisle towards her Prince Charming comes closer, Poppy thinks back to the three serious boyfriends she's had in her life: charming bad boy Dax, American outdoorsy guy Mike, and British intellectual Simon. As she shares many of her happy, embarrassing, and heart-breaking moments with each of these men, the reader comes closer and closer to finding out who exactly in the end won Poppy's heart and will be the man waiting for her at the end of the aisle.

I was really happy to discover that 'Poppy's Three Men' was exactly what I had hoped it would be: a fun and thoroughly enjoyable romantic comedy. The novella is a light and quick read (approximately 114 pages) and managed to keep me entertained from start to finish. The storyline reminded me of the film 'Definitely, Maybe' with Ryan Reynolds and Isla Fischer; a film which I loved, and I liked how Sophie Sloane took the basic storyline and gave it her own twist. Main character Poppy is really likeable and I enjoyed reading about her dating history and guessing which guy she would eventually end up with. All three guys (Dax, Mike, and Simon) had something special, something unique, and it was great to discover what happened to them and Sophie.

The story isn't written in chronological order; we kind of jump through time to various scenes in Poppy's life and together all the events form Poppy's complete dating history, ending with her wedding. I personally quite liked putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together as the story progressed. Because it is just a novella, there wasn't too much space for the author to really go into detail. I would have loved to have read more about Poppy's relationships and her background story; I think this would have been a great full-length novel. Overall, 'Poppy's Three Men' is a great, fun, quick chick lit read, perfect for fans of romantic comedies. Sophie Sloane has a promising voice and style and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future!
